I think it was a good choice also, but I don't know if I would have stayed away if I had not come here. I am bad at continuing to make choices.

So what do you think you will do once we go home?

I think I will still try to find another way to live. I think it will be very difficult and I may or may not survive alone because surviving is harder than I thought it would be and I will not have friends or places to get food.

I will try to go to someone else's home. In my friend Frisk's world there are many kinds of monsters that are people, and I could pretend to be a normal monster.

[nursetemple]

Why would you not have friends back home? You have friends here, after all.

But what matters, I think, is for you to find a place that makes you happy. If that Frisk's world, then we'll try and get you there, okay?

The world is a dangerous place.

[That's all she's going to say about that.]

Frisk's world or another world where I have a friend, but Frisk's world has the monsters.

You know, I'm pretty sure that any and every world is dangerous. But if you think you'd be more comfortable in a world with monsters, then you should try.

I like humans now. I think some of the worlds the humans here are from sound soft and nice, but I think it is obvious that I am not human.

[nursetemple]

I have never heard of a soft and nice world. Every world has good and bad sides, I imagine. But any of the worlds that resemble mine are full of terrible things, realistically. But it's true that if you don't look human, these worlds will... not welcome you. My own world doesn't welcome me half the time, and I am human, but of the wrong skin color.

Wrong skin color? There is a right skin color?

[nursetemple]

In my world? Yes. It's a very, very complicated situation, and it's been going on for, basically, forever. Many, many people are not bothered by skin color. But many, many people are, too. My world - and especially my country - is governed by white people, and I happen to not be white.

[She bites her lip, frowning.]

It really is a lot, lot more complicated than that, but basically, the answer is yes. There is a right skin color, where I'm from.

In my world there are many different skin colors, and I think it mostly does not matter except for the elves. The important part is what race a person is. Some of the races are not very good.

[She gives that a moment, thinks it over, and clarifies.]

I was taught that some of the races are not very good.

Well, my world only has humans, but we're referring as different skin colors as races. It's backwards and nonsensical if you ask me, especially when you have mixed races - like me. But in my world, white people and black people are different races. Even though we're the same.

[It feels so impossible to explain, but Claire can only try her best.]

What kind of race is not very good? Are we talking orcs and trolls, this kind of species?

[Ecks might be living in a fantasy world.]

Orcs are good. Trolls are stupid but good. The bad ones are the ones that are weak and deserve what they have got, like the white elves and the humans. The good ones are the ones that are strong, or smart enough that they do not have to be strong.

I do not think that the humans here are all weak and stupid.

[Does that mean Ecks is on the other side of the divide in the good/bad dichotomy in fantasy stories? It most definitely seems like it.

At least she's not hating all of them just because they're human, which is good.]

Are there any human back home that you think are not stupid, either?

I did not know any humans before. There are not very many of them left.

[That is true, so she can say it. She would struggle to claim that she had never met any humans...but she does not want to talk about meeting people she killed.]

Yet you still thought they were stupid? Without having ever met one of them?

The books say the reason there are not very many humans is because they were too weak to be part of the gods' new world. That is why humans are mostly gone, and that is why the humans who are still alive are mostly slaves.

Being weak makes them stupid? This is conflating two very different things. Weakness is one thing, and can't necessarily be helped. Stupidity is a completely different kettle of fish. I guess it depends on how they died, and what did your God do.

[She can't help but add:]

But He doesn't sound like a very benevolent God if He didn't have love for all His creatures, even the weaker ones.

They were not all Vin's creatures, and Vin is not benevolent. Vin makes chaos and madness and we serve him because he is smart and that makes us strong.

[She pauses for just a second.]

Except I don't like the part with chaos. I think there should be reasons for the things we do.

That... doesn't seem like a God I'd want to follow. Does following Him not make everyone mad, also?

Yes. I think that there is some madness involved.

I did not like some of the things I was told to do to serve him. I did not like that I did not understand reasons for the things that I was told to do. That is why I decided to leave.

Good for you, Ecks. You should never follow anyone - God or no - blindly. I believe everything you read, or hear, you should consider carefully, and make your own decision whether you believe it or not.

I have never been blind. Is blindness a metaphor? I am careful about which rules I add to my book, and my book is the set of rules that I follow, not other people's rules.
